Welcome to the Lakehead University Faculty of Engineering website. By being here you must be investigating the possibility of pursuing an engineering education. In the event you have not made up your mind, let me tell you some of the reasons our students cite for choosing engineering for their university education.
Most are attracted to engineering because of its academic approach. They are interested in a career in technological innovation and they view engineering to be concerned with technological applications and solving real-world problems in an analytical fashion.
Others are attracted to the strong sense of direction that the regimented engineering curriculum provides. To these students, this sense of purpose and direction is important. They feel that engineering offers them a sense of focus that is not easily found elsewhere. Another reason many students cite for choosing engineering education is the perceived challenge. The engineering course requirements are perceived by some students to be harder than other disciplines. They also include many science and mathematics courses. This provides students the opportunity to challenge themselves.
An important factor that plays in many students decisions is the attractiveness of engineers to employers. Employers recruiting engineers include not only manufacturers, chemical companies and electronics firms, but also banks, stock brokerages and consulting firms among others.
Furthermore, many students graduate from engineering and go on to law schools, business schools, medical schools, or graduate programs in engineering.
Before making their decision, students would be wise to seek advice from their parents, knowledgeable school counsellors, engineers and engineering students, engineering Deans, Chairs and professors, and of course friends that are familiar with engineering programs and the engineering profession. However, the final decision must always fall on the student.
